Seneca
The Seneca app icon: a marble bust of a Roman philosopher

When the lamp has been taken away and the house is quiet, I go over my whole day and weigh what I did and said. I hide nothing from myself, and pass nothing by.

Seneca, On Anger III.36

Seneca is an iPhone app for that review. Each evening it asks a few questions, keeps your answers in a private journal, and brings back what you meant to do differently, so the next evening starts from yesterday’s intention.

For iPhone, with iOS 26 or later.

Three questions, in order

A new journal begins with the questions the Stoics asked themselves:

  1. What did I do badly today?
  2. What did I do well?
  3. What could I do differently tomorrow?

Your answer to the last one is carried into the next day as its intention. The following evening, Seneca shows it above the questions, and over the weeks, Follow-Through shows what became of each one.

The questions are yours to change. Seneca also comes with practice packs for other traditions: the Stoic evening review, the Step 10 nightly inventory, the Ignatian examen, gratitude and intention, and virtue tracking.

Write it, or say it

Type your answers, or speak them. Recordings are transcribed on the iPhone by Apple’s speech models, and on iPhones with Apple Intelligence, a spoken reflection is split into an answer for each question. The audio never leaves your phone.

A focus that stays

Set a single standing focus, a sentence you want in front of you for a while, and it appears each evening until you change or clear it.

Yours alone

There is no account to make and nothing to sign in to. Seneca has no server, and it collects no data, runs no analytics, and shows no ads. Your journal lives on your iPhone. If you want it on another device, Seneca keeps it in a folder you choose, such as one in your own iCloud Drive. When you want to share a review or a day with someone, you see exactly what will be sent before it goes. Read the privacy policy.
